Welcome to the Human Function Project -- Rethinking What We Usually Measure

If you’re like most people, you’ve spent your entire life tracking the wrong metrics. Weight on the scale. Blood pressure numbers. Cholesterol readings.

Maybe your weekly step count or miles logged. All useful data points, no question. But none of them answer the question that actually matters:

How well is your body functioning?

That’s why we created the Human Function Index. Because function is the real game-changer.

It’s what determines how confidently you move through your day, how fast you react when life throws something at you, how quickly you recover, and how much physical freedom you hold onto as the years add up.

The good news? Function isn’t fixed at any age. It can improve—dramatically. The better news? Most people have far more upside than they realize.

How Your Nervous System Really Works

Key Point: Your body wasn’t built to run at full capacity 24/7.  Quite the opposite, actually. Your brain is a master at energy conservation.

If it senses you’re not regularly demanding balance, coordination, quick reactions, flexibility, or strength, it quietly turns the dial down. Not because “you’re just getting older,” but because maintaining those systems costs energy.

Your nervous system is ruthlessly efficient.

“Use it or lose it” isn’t motivational poster talk. It’s basic biology.

The exciting flip side: your brain is equally willing to turn those systems back up when you give it clear, consistent reasons to do so.

Reconnecting Brain and Body

This is why certain aspects of physical function can improve faster than most people expect.

-Building significant muscle takes time.
-Strengthening bone takes time.
-Dropping body fat takes time.

But reconnecting your brain with the rest of your body? That can happen surprisingly quickly.

Take balance, for example. It’s not just “stronger legs.” It’s your eyes, inner ear, joints, muscles, and brain all talking efficiently.

Give that communication loop the right inputs, and the system often lights back up faster than you’d think.

Same story with reaction time, coordination, and simple confidence in movement.

Strength vs. Responsiveness

Strength is important. No one’s arguing against it. But responsiveness might matter more in real life.

Daily existence rarely asks you to deadlift 300 pounds.
It asks you to catch your balance when you miss a curb.

Grab something before it hits the floor.
Turn quickly without falling.
Stop yourself from slipping on ice or a wet surface.

Those moments are won or lost in how fast your body senses the threat and responds—not in raw power.

Simple Daily Habits That Move the Needle

Improving function doesn’t always mean grinding out an hour in the gym. One of the highest-leverage habits I recommend: stand on one foot while brushing your teeth. Morning and night. No extra time required.

You’re sending your nervous system a clear, repeated signal that balance still matters. The same principle applies to walking. Walking is fantastic and everyone should do more of it. But steady-state walking alone doesn’t fully challenge the systems that keep you capable—balance, directional changes, impact, instability, novelty. Your body needs variety. Those varied signals tell your nervous system to stay sharp and engaged.

Where Power Plate Comes In

There are many effective paths to better function: strength training, sports, dedicated balance work, yoga, you name it.

Power Plate is simply a highly efficient way to deliver many of those signals at once. Its multidirectional harmonic vibration activates muscles through natural reflexes, challenges balance and stability, boosts circulation and lymphatic flow, and improves brain-body communication—all in a short session.

It doesn’t replace real movement. It makes your movement more effective. Think of the Power Plate as an essential daily tool and habit to keep your body primed.  Or recovered.  Even people who have had strokes or bad spinal injuries have recovered a great deal of functionality using Power Plate as a key part of their daily routine.

What Comes Next

The Human Function Index is just the start. We’ll keep sharing practical habits, clear ideas, and relevant research that help you understand and improve how your body actually works—no matter your age or starting point.

This isn’t about exercising harder. It’s about understanding your body well enough to send it better signals. When your body functions better, everything else in life gets easier.
